If an artists' music video were indicative of one's listening experience, "Kathy Lee" would certainly be representative of Hamilton, ON electro R&B artist Jessy Lanza's Pull My Hair Back. The clip showcases Steeltown hero Jed the Dancing Guy clumsily two-stepping across the streets of Hamilton for no rhyme or reason. Listening to the album's mix of '90s R&B and house evokes a similar feeling of confusion, as well as enjoyment. Co-produced by Jeremy Greenspan (Junior Boys), Lanza's lean voice flutters over the menacing pitter-patter of snares on "5785021," while "As If" hosts a rolling whirlpool of synths that bubbles into the chorus. While distinct, each song melds into the next, giving the album a sense of cohesion, yet also a feeling of repetition. However, Pull My Hair Back still shines with nonsensical warmth that is just as much sensual as strange. Kathy Lee would be proud.
