The death of A$AP Yams (a.k.a. Steven Rodriguez) hit people hard this year. Among those that felt the loss are cloud rap crew Friendzone, who have just unveiled a project called While U Wait that is dedicated to the late producer.
While U Wait is the first major release from the Oakland outfit since 2013's DX, and it's fit with seven new numbers that flirt with hazy electronic textures, New Age synthesizers and syrupy beats.
Among these, "Wishes" is an especially ambient and miasmic one-minute track that offers not much more than an airy drone, while near-ten minute closer "Magic" astonishes with its choppy break beats, timid vocal snippets, speaker-flooding synth wizardry and some last minute guitar shredding.
