UPDATE: Well, it looks like Foo Fighters pulled a fast one on us all. Their "announcement," it turns out, is a viral video wherein Dave Grohl pretends he's going solo and ditching his band. The video closes with an all-caps statement:
"FOR THE MILLIONTH TIME, WE'RE NOT BREAKING UP. AND NOBODY'S GOING FUCKING SOLO!"
This morning, the web was abuzz with rumours that the Foo Fighters were about to call it quits on their long, storied rock career. While many denied the claims, it now looks like the story was basically true — the band are on an "indefinite hiatus."
Artisan News have posted a new video [via CoS] containing quotes from an interview with Taylor Hawkins completed in January of this year.
In the interview, Hawkins explains that the band is on an indefinite hiatus, though he jokingly refers to it as an "ihateus."
"We're on ihateus right now," he said. "We're on an indefinite ihateus.... Instead of 'hiatus' we call it 'ihateus.'"
While it's a little bit jokey in tone, he goes on to offer a very serious explanation for the band's break. "It's not because we don't love each other, or don't want to make music together…. We did so much in the last five or six years — we as a band could go into the studio tomorrow and have just as much fun as we ever had, but I think the world needs a break from us for a little while."
Watch Taylor Hawkins speak about the band's break below. The Foo Fighters are expected to make an official announcement at some point tonight.
