Concealer

'Fêted:Fetid' (album stream)

Earlier this summer, Edmonton two-piece Concealer announced that they had signed to Rae Spoon's Coax Records for their debut album Fêted:Fetid. As that record's release date inches closer, Exclaim! is giving you a chance to hear it early and in its entirety.

The project is a collaboration between roots rocker and past Old Reliable member Mark Davis on vocals and bass, and missmannered, who manipulates the electronics. Dubbing their sound "heavy wave," Concealer deliver a blend of sleazy rock, proto-punk and emotionally raw folk music, all draped in a cloak of the darker, more sinister elements of electronica.

"As a songwriter working primarily in the roots arena, I used to agonize over lyrical content, thinking that I had to strive for a poetic and profound, yet understandable narrative," said Davis in a press release. "Sometime over the past few years, I've let go of those self-imposed requirements that can lead to pretentiousness when not executed well. And the presence of Concealer has played a significant role in that shift."

That fresh approach manifests itself throughout the new album, resulting in a collection of songs that ranges from gloomy synth-rock ("Your Master's Wishes, "Never Know," "High and Blind") to slightly more experimental electro-inspired fare ("Place to Hide," "Sank") before coming to a close with the sparse, slow-burning 10-minute finale "Throw Me to the Lions."

Fêted:Fetid arrives on September 4, but you can scroll past their upcoming live shows to give it an advanced listen right now in the player below.
