Chandra Revisits 1983 Demo for New Quarantine Single

"Shut In / Shut Out" was recorded remotely with members of the singer's Canadian band

Onetime teenage post-punk Chandra has had her music rediscovered in recent years, turning from a lost underground icon into a full-blown touring musician. Now, she's revisited a decades-old demo for a new quarantine single.

"Shut In / Shut Out" was originally recorded in 1983, when Chandra was 14. It comes from a four-track demo recorded in a NYC apartment, but this song had been forgotten until recently because it was on a cassette labelled "Nothing." Having uncovered the track, Chandra and her Canada-based band rehearsed it a few times. They subsequently recorded their parts remotely during lockdown, resulting in this recording.

In a statement, Chandra said of the song, "I don't have a clear memory of what inspired it. My guess is that it was meant to be a message to people who felt they were on the periphery. I was giving advice based on my experiences at middle school of feeling excluded and rejected."

All proceeds from "Shut In / Shut Out" (and its dub remix by Fred Thomas) will be donated to the Encampment Support Network and Through These Doors. Check out the song below, along with a video recorded remotely by the band members at home.
