Canadian Indie Stars Convene for 'LOUD on Planet X' Videogame

Rock Band and Guitar Hero are both set to relaunch this year, but for gamers whose tastes skew towards Canadian indie, LOUD on Planet X is even better. It's an arcade-style videogame that features some notable Canuck acts, and it's being funded with a newly launched Kickstarter campaign.

The game features Tegan and Sara, METZ, Metric, Lights, July Talk, Fucked Up, Cadence Weapon, Austra and more. There are nine artists involved so far (each of whom will contribute two songs); if the developers at Toronto's Pop Sandbox earn enough money on Kickstarter, they will up the number to 12 artists.

Players will have to use the power of rock to defend themselves from stage-storming extraterrestrial attackers. It's said to combine elements of "rhythm game and classic shooter with tower defence elements."

The gameplay is described like this: "Choose from a cross-section of top current indie music artists, then defend your stage from hordes of quirky aliens by tapping to the music and using a fun assortment of makeshift weapons like speakers, strobe lights, fog machines, amplifiers, bouncers and custom special attacks!"

LOUD on Planet X is slated to arrive this fall through the PlayStation network, Steam, iOS and Android. If the fundraising goes well, it will also come to Nintendo Wii-U, and Xbox is a possible goal down the line.

Those who contribute to the fundraising campaign can get goodies including a green 7-inch record featuring original tracks from Mike Haliechuk and Jonah Falco of Fucked Up, Brendan Canning and Justin Peroff of Broken Social Scene, and Harrison. Pledgers can also get signed prints, personal avatars that appear in the game and more.

The campaign's initial goal is $30,000. There are also additional fundraising goals beyond that. Check out the campaign here.
