Once-dominating videogame series Guitar Hero hasn't had a new instalment since 2010, but that will soon change, as Activision Blizzard Inc. is rebooting the franchise with Guitar Hero Live. It's due out this fall.
It's being developed by FreeStyleGames. This is essentially the same game as it was in the past, as players will still use button cues on a small plastic axe to simulate playing popular songs on guitar. The makers have redesigned the controller; it now uses two rows of three buttons (so six buttons in all).
The element of coloured buttons has been removed. It perhaps seems like a slightly more authentic guitar experience, but it still looks like a videogame controller rather than a real instrument.
Artists who have been confirmed for the game include the Black Keys, the War on Drugs, Fall Out Boy, the Rolling Stones, My Chemical Romance, Green Day, Ed Sheeran, Skrillex, Gary Clark, Jr., the Lumineers, Carrie Underwood, Pierce the Veil and Blitz Kids. It will be available on PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Wii U.
The game will simulate the experience of playing live, as players will view the game in first person and experience reactions from the crowd and their bandmates. It all looks very realistic, so watch the trailer below.
In addition to the concert element of Guitar Hero Live, there will also be a music video network called GHTV, which will allow users to play along with hundreds of videos that will be frequently updated. The trailer calls GHTV "the world's first playable music video network."
