Vancouver-based Exclaim! New Faves alumna Ashley Shadow follows up the September release of her record Only the End with a video for the track "Don't Slow Me Down."

The tender visual accompaniment was filmed by Shadow and Will Oldham (a.k.a. Bonnie "Prince" Billy), who is also featured on the track. The Tyler Mcleod and Shadow-directed scenes lean into all things retro, replete with stuttering tape reels across faded visuals.

An organic process through and through, the footage was collected through gut instincts. "Since we had trouble connecting in the flesh with Will Oldham we decided to get creative with our approach to this video," Shadow said of the video's creation in a release. "I asked Will to send some footage to the song with little direction and said to get as weird as he wanted with it, he's a professional."

Shadow elaborated on the video's inception, explaining it as a sentient force rather than a product of manufactured efforts: "When Will's footage arrived Tyler McLeod and I were pumped up and the gears started turning. The creative juices were flowing and it all unfolded a wave of cosmic vibrations. Through analogue effects and nostalgic references the video took on its own life and we succumbed to the creative forces of multi-dimensional techniques. Thus a video was born."

As a viewer, the video is an experience — like to trip in an '80s bowling alley. It's unsurprising the unique video arrives after the critically acclaimed Only the End, as Shadow knows how to make an impression.
