Amy Winehouse

The Girl Done Good

BY Kevin JonesPublished May 24, 2008

Now that Amy Winehouse’s superstardom has been confirmed by her front and centre inclusion in gossip rags the world over, it’s time for the unauthorised "behind the music” set to get their piece of the pie. This DVD biography attempts to offer an above board look at the raw talent behind her musical success as analysed by a collection of gushing music journalists, knowledgeable jazz teachers and a few of her former music school instructors. With the relatively few significant contributors to the film, this hour-and-20-minute review of the singer’s sparse, two-album back catalogue offers little that you couldn’t glean from listening to the discs yourself, aside from some interesting comparative footage of prime Winehouse influencers Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington that could have made for a pretty interesting study in itself.
