The First Teaser Trailer for Amy Winehouse Biopic 'Back to Black' Is Here

Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, the film starring Marisa Abela is expected to hit theatres this spring

It feels like there's been talk of an Amy Winehouse biopic for eons. Following the legend's death in 2011, Asif Kapadia's 2015 documentary Amy won an Oscar — and a slew of names of potential actors to portray her began circulating, as have back-and-forth discussions about whether Winehouse's family supports her life being illustrated in a biopic.

This spring, the long-developing Back to Black — made with the support of the soul artist's family — will arrive in theatres internationally. Directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) with a screenplay by Mark Greenhalgh, it sees Industry's Marisa Abela (who is currently 27, the same age the singer-songwriter was when she died) star as Winehouse. Jack O'Connell (Ferrari) plays her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil. They appear alongside Eddie Marsan, Juliet Cowan and Lesley Manville.

The teaser trailer suggests what can be expected: a story about the pain behind Winehouse's brilliance and the lethal consequences of how she coped with her sudden rise to fame. "You've gotta remember, I ain't no Spice Girl," Abela tells handlers in the trailer, which is a bit cringy but also fittingly Winehouse.

After premiering in the UK on April 11, Back to Black is slated to hit North American theatres on May 10 as one of Exclaim!'s Most Anticipated Films of 2024. Check out the teaser trailer below.
