The fifth instalment of the Scream franchise is expected in theatres next January after filming last year throughout the pandemic. In order to keep details about the film quiet for the next several months, Radio Silence filmmaking duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are putting up safeguards to prevent possible leaks.
To avoid fan-led spoilers, the directors not only had several endings scripted, but also filmed, they confirmed with Bloody Disgusting. This means the Wilmington, NC-shot movie's true ending isn't even necessarily common knowledge among the OG/returning Scream cast, including Neve Campbell who is reprising her role as Sydney Prescott, Courteney Cox (playing Gale Weathers) and David Arquette (returning as Dewey Riley).
It's not the first time that the Scream crew have gone on the defence against spoiler-thirsty fans. Back in 1997 while shooting Scream 2, the identities of the killers were leaked along with much of the film's plot, leading to multiple rewrites. The franchise has been known to employ decoys as a means to avoid leaks ever since.
What we do know for sure about the upcoming instalment is that the film — which is actually just titled Scream — will follow "a woman returning to her home town to try to find out who has been committing a series of vicious crimes." In addition to Campbell, Arquette and Cox, the movie will also star Dylan Minnette, Jenna Ortega and Jack Quaid, among others.
Scream is set to be released worldwide on January 14, 2022. The most recent instalment of the franchise was 2011's Scream 4. Campbell, Arquette and Cox have starred in all four instalments since the late Wes Craven's first Scream film hit theatres in the late '90s.
