J.K. Rowling isn't the only person with bad PR associated with the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them franchise. Johnny Depp, who starred as Grindelwald in the franchise thus far, has stepped down following a high-profile court cast where he was labelled a "wife beater" in his marriage to Amber Heard.
Warner Bros. apparently asked Depp to resign. In an official statement, the studio said, "Johnny Depp will depart the Fantastic Beasts franchise. We thank Johnny for his work on the films to date. Fantastic Beasts 3 is currently in production, and the role of Gellert Grindelwald will be recast. The film will debut in theatres worldwide in the summer of 2022."
Depp shared his own statement on Instagram, most notably speaking out against the British courts that ruled he could not sue The Sun for libel after they called him a "wife beater." The court said that what The Sun printed was "substantially true."
