Beloved animated series The Magic School Bus will soon blast from the depths of your childhood nostalgia to the big screen, and Elizabeth Banks will be in the driver's seat as Ms. Frizzle.
Scholastic Entertainment announced today that Banks would play the iconic teacher in a hybrid live-action and animated feature film based on the children's books authored by Joanna Cole and illustrated by Bruce Degen.
Currently in development, the feature is a production of Scholastic Entertainment, Brownstone Productions, Marc Platt Productions and Universal Pictures. Banks will also produce alongside Max Handelman for Brownstone.
"We are delighted to bring to life the iconic Ms. Frizzle and her zest for knowledge and adventure in a fresh new way that inspires the next generation of kids to explore science and supports the dedicated teachers who help make science real and accessible for young learners every day," Scholastic Entertainment president and chief strategy officer Iole Lucchese said in a statement.
"We're also extremely excited to be working with such top-tier partners as Elizabeth Banks, Marc Platt Productions, Brownstone Productions, Universal Pictures, and all of the amazing talent assembled for this noteworthy feature film."
The Magic School Bus book series was first adapted into the critically-acclaimed animated PBS show of the same name in 1994. It featured a theme song performed by the late Little Richard, and Lily Tomlin as the voice of Ms. Frizzle.
An animated reboot dubbed The Magic School Bus Rides Again arrived on Netflix in 2017, with Kate McKinnon voicing Ms. Frizzle's sister, Fiona.
