A meeting of musical minds on January 25 led to an insightful discussion about Toronto's burgeoning identity as a music city. The Wavelength Pop-Up Gallery at the Huntclub Studios played host to the second Toronto Music Moment talk, with Wavelength Artistic Director Jonathan Bunce moderating a discussion based on this question: "Given its new commitment to supporting the music industry, how can the City of Toronto and its new Music Office better serve the independent music community (and vice versa)?"
Panellists included blogTO music editor Aubrey Jax, award-winning journalist/culture critic Dalton Higgins, NXNE programmer Cheryl MacIver, Harbourfront Centre arts programmer Sergio Elmir, and Music Sector Development Officer Mike Tanner.
Having been appointed to the position by the city last year, Tanner expressed his excitement in working to build a better relationship between the city and its music community. Impressed by the diversity, creativity, and resiliency that Toronto's scene has shown, Tanner further outlined the goals that he and his staff aim to meet through establishing the office.
The other panellists brought plenty of speaking points of their own, deliberating on everything from establishing alternative performance spaces, streamlining relations with City Hall, creating musical opportunities outside of the GTA, and communication endeavours to unite the scene at the grassroots level.
