As Bloodshot Records celebrates its 20th anniversary, it is preparing to release a compilation called While No One Was Looking: Toasting 20 Years of Bloodshot Records, featuring various artists covering songs from the label's catalogue. This includes Superchunk, who offered up a version of Ryan Adams' "Come Pick Me Up."
This song is the emotional centrepiece of Adams' bummed-out 2000 album Heartbreaker, but it sounds significantly less melancholic in Superchunk's hands. The bitter breakup lyrics are still poignant, but Superchunk transform the country ballad into a crunchy power-pop anthem. It's probably not exactly what Adams had in mind, but the song still works well in this format.
Superchunk's Mac McCaughan said in a statement [via Pitchfork], "After going through probably a hundred songs from the Bloodshot catalog we decided to record 'Come Pick Me Up' from Heartbreaker. It's a song I've always wanted to cover AND Ryan claims the title came from our album of the same name, so it seemed fitting. Though he may have just been saying that to be nice."
