Vancouver psych-prog aficionados Sprïng are still a relatively new entity in the Canadian music world, having released their debut album, Celebrations, a little more than a year ago. They've already called it a day, however, and their final show will be this Thursday (July 16) at the Biltmore Cabaret in their hometown.
From the sound of things, the breakup isn't acrimonious. Rather, a press release from Sprïng explains that "the band member's different interests are pulling them in different directions."
The musicians' new endeavours will take some of them to different cities: frontman Joseph Hirabayashi will be moving to Montreal and will release an album under the name Jo Passed later in 2015, while drummer Kevin Romain will be studying music in Senegal and then moving to New York to pursue a jazz career.
Guitarist Elliot Langford, meanwhile, will play drums with Sigh Down One and embark upon new projects, while bassist Ridley Bishop will tour with Olenka and the Autumn Lovers and work on solo material.
According to a Facebook post, the gig this week will be "our last show for the foreseeable future or maybe ever." In other words, Vancouver residents who want to be sure to see the band one last time should arrange to be at the Biltmore on Thursday. See details for the event here. Hirabayashi and Langford played in a punk group called Life Without Water close to a decade ago, and that project morphed into the post-hardcore outfit SSRIs. After Romain and Bishop joined, they developed a new sound and changed the name to Sprïng in 2013.
