Michael Rault

'Living Daylight' (album stream)

BY Alex HudsonPublished Jun 16, 2014

So far in 2014, Toronto-via-Edmonton songwriter Michael Rault has shared some new material online, and now he's unveiled his new collection in full. Living Daylight is due out on June 24 through Pirates Blend Records, and it's available to stream in full on Exclaim.ca.

The release was recorded and performed in the spring of 2013 by Rault and his cousin/Mint Record electro-pop dude Renny Wilson. Sessions took place at home and at Edmonton's Riverdale Recorders studio.

The songs imbue garage-hewn rock grit with pop sweetness, as "All Alone (On My Own)" rests its vocal harmonies atop fuzzy six-strings, "Too Bad So Sad" takes a bouncy approach to psychedelia, and "Lovers Lie" and "Too All My Friends" tap into '60s pop melodicism. In case you were wondering, the grammatical gaffe in the latter track is intentional, since it's inspired by a friend's botched tattoo.
