U.S. Girls — the experimental pop project helmed by Meg Remy — are back with their eighth studio album, previewed today by noisy, clap-along new single "Futures Bet." They'll also take the new tunes on the road with Jane Inc this spring.
Bless This Mess blesses us with its presence on February 24 via Royal Mountain. It's the highly-anticipated follow-up to 2020's Heavy Light — one of Exclaim!'s 50 best albums that year.
Including previous singles "So Typically Now" and title track "Bless This Mess," the 10-track collection has featured collaborations with Michael Rault, Marker Starling and Alanna Stuart, as well as contributions from Beck, Basia Bulat, Alex Frankel (Holy Ghost!), Ryland Blackinton (Cobra Starship) and Roger Manning Jr. (Jellyfish).
According to press materials, the album "expands the sonic and thematic palette of U.S. Girls, fusing the muses of funk, mythology, and the radical disorientation of joy into an electric tapestry of anthems, aches, and awakenings."
Bless This Mess was conceived alongside Remy's twins and their birth, presenting an embodied meditation on motherhood's complexities. As her body changed, her voice did too — Remy's diaphragm lost breathing room, while she was pregnant. Much of the album was tracked with the babies either in utero or in her arms, with closer "Pump" sampling her breast pump.
U.S. Girls have mapped out a handful of North American tour dates for the spring, bookended by Canadian shows in Montreal and Toronto. The trek kicks off at Montreal's Centre PHI on April 13, and ends with a double-header at Toronto's Velvet Underground on April 27 and 28.
