It looks as if Lil Wayne is taking a cue from his buddy Drake. Just like Drizzy, who released his If You're Reading This It's Too Late last night (February 12), Weezy is preparing to release a late-night mixtape in a matter of hours.
This is the rapper's recently promised Free Weezy collection. It will be released at midnight on iTunes, Google Play and the MyMixtapez. (MyMixtapez has posted a series of tweets today about the album's impending arrive).
Lil Wayne has previously referred to Free Weezy as an "album" rather than a mixtape. Earlier today, he hinted at the release with this vague tweet:
UPDATE: Contrary to various reports, it doesn't appear the release is indeed dropping tonight after all.

This releases comes in the midst of Weezy's legal battle with his label, Cash Money. Is it a coincidence that both he and labelmate Drake are dropping new surprise releases within a day of one another? Some have speculated that this might be a way for their to fulfill their contracts with their label. And certainly, the title of Free Weezy (and its handcuff-featuring artwork) are suggestive of Weezy's struggle to be freed from Cash Money.
