Kim Gordon Opens Up About Split from Thurston Moore, Her Battle with Breast Cancer and New Band

A new interview with Sonic Youth bassist Kim Gordon has shed some candid details on her split from Thurston Moore in 2011, while also revealing that she had recently battled breast cancer.

Speaking with Elle, Gordon detailed just how her 27-year relationship with Moore fell apart.

According to the Gordon, Moore had been unfaithful with another artist, whom she doesn't name in the interview. The mystery woman had come into their lives as "the girlfriend of an erstwhile band member" and later a collaborator of Moore's on a literary project. Gordon says she found out about an affair after discovering a text message and confronted her spouse about it.

"We never got to the point where we could just get rid of her so I could decide what I wanted to do," Gordon said. "Thurston was carrying on this whole double life with her. He was really like a lost soul."

The piece goes on to say that Moore moved out, while Gordon took solace in hip-hop. "Rap music is really good when you're traumatized," she admitted.

Shortly after the split, Gordon learned she had a non-invasive form of breast cancer called ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). "I'm fine; it's literally the best you can have," she said of the cancer, which was removed via a lumpectomy. "I didn't do radiation or anything, but I was like, 'Okay, what else is going to happen to me?'"

While Sonic Youth has been on hiatus since the split, Gordon has had a number of projects on the go. Among other things, she has been prepping paintings for an upcoming show at a San Francisco art gallery called Queen's Nails, she's shot an ad campaign for Saint Laurent, and she's performed a Velvet Underground tribute with John Cale at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, as well as toured Europe with Ikue Mori.

The interview also reveals that Gordon will put out a record by her new band Body/Head, though details on the debut LP are still pending.
