Back in the '70s, the Hollywood Vampires were a hard-drinking Sunset Strip supergroup. Now, the band have reemerged in an updated form, and they've roped in a heap of big-name guests for a self-titled album. Hollywood Vampires is due out on September 11.
The core of the supergroup is formed by actor Johnny Depp, shock-rocker Alice Cooper, and Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry. Guests on the LP include Paul McCartney, Dave Grohl, Slash, AC/DC's Brian Johnson, Jane's Addiction's Perry Farrell, the Eagles' Joe Walsh, Ringo's son Zak Starkey (The Who, Oasis), late actor Christopher Lee and more.
The album was recorded over the course of two years with producer Bob Ezrin. It includes two original songs ("Raise the Dead" and "Dead Drunk Friends"), plus a heap of classic rock covers like the Who's "My Generation," Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love," T. Rex's "Jeepster," Jimi Hendrix's "Manic Depression," the Doors' "Break on Through," and a medley with Alice Cooper's "School's Out" and Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall Part 2."
See the tracklist below, along with the credits noting who played on which song. A short trailer can be seen at the bottom of this page, and it includes footage of many of the celebs in the studio.
The album's packaging was designed to look like an antique book and it can be seen above. The liner notes were written by original Hollywood Vampires member Bernie Taupin. A press release includes this extract:
I'm not here to defend their vices. Over-indulgence of any sort does not ultimately constitute for a healthy mind and body. And while on the periphery of those involved, wives may have come and gone, career choices may have been deemed dubious, and heartbreak in some cases stalked a dark corridor, but in the lair of the Hollywood Vampires only joy and laughter reigned. I'm not completely sure what constituted bad behaviour back then, but in this lair it existed in a bubble, a hermetically sealed dome of fun. It may not have been the round table at the Algonquin, but these were witty, intelligent guys who often got raucous and loud, but rest assured there were no bystanders or animals hurt in the making of the Hollywood Vampires.
All artist proceeds from the release will be donated to MusiCares.
