Hey Mother Death followed up their self-titled EP with a limited release of their debut LP Highway last year, but that full-length record is now getting re-released thanks to Paper Bag Records. Before the label launches the larger-scale release later this week, though, Exclaim! is streaming the album in its entirety.
Comprising Parisian vocalist Laurence Strelka and Haligonian musician Denma Peisinger, Hey Mother Death pieced together the record "from the solitude of Petite Riviere, Nova Scotia, to claustrophobia in Paris," with the work finally getting finished in a 13th century house in rural France.
The result is a dense, layered collection of spoken word compositions "with deep soul and cinematic overtones." Across the four tracks, Strelka and Peisinger take the listener through tense electro-tinged soundscapes ("Highway," "The Hills"), psychedelic trips ("Bad Sex") and surrealist, soundtrack-esque poetic movements ("Snake Power").
Drum machine beats and droning synths blend with jazz bass and distorted guitars throughout the album, making for a truly eclectic, engaging and always-interesting listen.
