Great Lake Swimmers Frontman Tony Dekker Goes Solo for 'Prayer of the Woods'
Album recording began this June at St. Brendan's Church in Rockport, ON, with Justin Nace. Additional tracking was completed in July at the House of Miracles in Cambridge, ON. Dekker played all of the instruments himself, and a press release notes that these included "guitars, accordion, mandolin, piano, pump organ, Hammond B3, mellotron, harmonica, autoharp, and percussion."
In addition to original tunes, the 10-song tracklist includes covers of "Land of the Glass Pinecones" by '80s new wave act Human Sexual Response and "Carefree Highway" by Gordon Lightfoot, while the title track is based on an anonymous Portuguese poem. The album reportedly "presents a stark portrait of a Canadian troubadour."
Scroll past the tracklist to check out Dekker's upcoming Canadian tour schedule, which finds the songwriter playing a dozen shows this fall.
Great Lake Swimmers fans needn't worry that this solo album will signal the end of Dekker's full-band work; the songwriter is referring to this album as a "musical interlude" between Great Lake Swimmers albums. Expect the band's next LP in 2014.
