Damon Albarn recently announced the end of Gorillaz, but fans of the iconic British songwriter have held out hope that this might leave him free to record a new album with the recently reunited Blur. Well, we've got some rather discouraging news for you: in a new interview, Albarn shot down the possibility of releasing new music with either Gorillaz or Blur.
When queried about the possibility of a Blur record, Albarn simply told the Guardian, "No, I don't think so."
As for planning more live shows, he offered, "No, not really."
So are Blur done for good? "I think so, yeah," he added. "And I hope that's the truth: that that's how we end it. I don't know: you can write scripts, and they always end up going... Well, one thing I've learned, and I'm sure you're exactly the same, is that everything I think I've got totally sorted out, and I know exactly what's going to happen, it never works out that way."
Blur's August 12 performance at the Olympics in London will likely be their final show.
As for Gorillaz, he explained that the project has been discontinued due to the breakdown in his collaboration with cartoonist Jamie Hewlett. These problems came to a head during the band's 2010 album, Plastic Beach, and its subsequent tour.
"The music and the videos weren't working as well together, but I felt we'd made a really good record, and I was into it. So we went and played it," Albarn explained.
He said it was "unlikely" that the band would record again, and admitted that he and Hewlett "were at cross purposes somewhat on that last record." When asked if the pair had fallen out, Albarn responded, "Well, that sounds very juvenile, doesn't it? But being juvenile about it, it happens. It's a shame."
He indicated that it might be possible for the band to reconvene if their former creative spark was rekindled.
Of course, that doesn't mean that Albarn won't find other creative outlets. He recently released a full-length with his band Rocket Juice and the Moon, and his Dr. Dee album will arrive on May 8.
