Way back in the dark ages of 2009, director Cary Fukunaga (Sin Nombre, Jane Eyre, True Detective) recruited Owen Pallett and Beirut's Zach Condon for a musical he was working on. Many fans had likely forgotten about the project, but luckily Fukunaga hasn't, since he's still working on it.
"These things that I've been working on for a long time, I want to get them made," he told The Playlist. "I still have to make a living every now and then in between them, but the musical is definitely alive."
Although he hasn't had much contact with Pallett and Condon recently, he is still optimistic about their involvement in the project. He explained, "I haven't talked to Owen [Pallet] in a while, but we've always stayed in touch. I haven't talked to Zach [Condon] in a while either. But I'm still an enormous fan of their work, so as I get closer to having the libretto and a place where you can make the music, then I can reach out. Making the music: that's the next fun part."
While it seems that he's still planning to turn the musical into a film, he now intends to make it a stage production first. Fukunaga said that the story has been written — it's "a love story, but it's kind of about what happens after love and then before the next love" — and there are currently "placeholders for songs." Hopefully Pallett and Condon are still on board and can help Fukunaga turn his vision into reality.
Meanwhile, Fukunaga has a film about African child soldiers called Beasts of No Nation due out in theatres and on Netflix on October 16.
