A new event is joining the Canadian festival landscape this year. It's called Wonderhorse, and the first-ever fest will be taking place in the Yukon this spring.
The inaugural all-ages event will go down on May 14 to 17 at various venues in Whitehorse, Carcross and Dawson City, "with the potential for programming in other communities," according to a press release.
The artists announced so far include Haviah Mighty, Necking, Jeremy Parkin, FET.NAT, Steven Lambke, Wares, the Sweeties and Ida Toninato.
The press release explains the following of the event:
Wonderhorse was born from a need to make and present art and music differently in the Yukon. To create safe and inclusive creative spaces for art-making, dialogues, and mentorship that is shared by people and artists of varying cultural backgrounds, languages, age, ability, artistic practice, and aesthetic. To take artistic risks. To build capacity and opportunity for underrepresented groups, particularly young artists, Indigenous artists, and those living in rural communities.
The event is being organized by the Society of Something Shows, which added the following:
We have chosen the name Wonderhorse both as a play on the name of Yukon's capital city and to invoke a sense of wonder. The festival program will expose festival goers to a great variety of musical genres and new music being created from across Canada. For Yukoners, we aim to broaden horizons and access to types of arts and music that is not typically presented in the Territory. For people outside the Yukon, we hope to instill a curiosity about the thriving and diverse arts and music scene that is present here.
Along with bringing all the musical acts to the North, Wonderhorse "seeks to partner with and for youth, rural communities and First Nations; enhance communities through artistic programming; increase capacity of local professionals and industry; and to be inclusive, champion diversity, and prioritize accessibility."
