Young Benjamins Return with 'Losing Our Shadows' LP, Premiere New Single

BY Sarah MurphyPublished May 3, 2016

Saskatoon indie-pop crew Young Benjamins offered up their debut album Less Argue back in 2013 and now the three-piece has unveiled plans for their sophomore LP. Titled Losing Our Shadows, the new record is set to arrive on June 3.

It marks a departure from the folk influences of their first album, but still hears the band blending together the members' unique geographical, cultural and musical roots. Their diverse Canadian, UK, Fransaskois and Persian identities inform the band's sound, as do their rich sonic backgrounds in traditional, classical, pop and math rock forms of music.

Charming lyrics, catchy hooks and cinematic instrumentation bring all of those influences together on the new record, and the first example has arrived in the form of the new single "From the South."

"It might seem confusing but 'From the South' isn't a place or even a general location]," singer and guitarist Neusha Mofazzali tells Exclaim! "It is do with emptiness and the coldness of denial from a previous acquaintance. The story lies with seeing a person that was supposed to have left your city completely, however that is not the case at all, and now you are seeing them even more. The song embodies how quickly you can dread the ones you have once loved."

Written primarily based on three simple piano chords, the track provides a bit of a ballad-esque respite from the rest of the album's louder sound. Exclaim! has the exclusive premiere of "From the South," and you can scroll past the group's upcoming live shows to give it a spin right now.
