Xiu Xiu backed off from their own prolific catalogue last year to celebrate the music of cult TV series Twin Peaks over a series of live events. Further proving their love for the Black Lodge, Laura Palmer and a damn fine cup of coffee, the U.S. experimentalists have revealed they've recorded parts of the score too. Xiu Xiu Plays the Music of Twin Peaks arrives April 16 through Polyvinyl, as part of Record Store Day.
A press release explains that Australia's Gallery of Modern Art had first commissioned the group to perform Twin Peaks material composed by Angelo Badalamenti as part of their David Lynch: Between Two Worlds exhibition in 2015. Xiu Xiu have since staged their show of reinterpretations around the world.
With Xiu Xiu's ever-shifting, experimental nature in mind, it's added in the press release that "it is hard to imagine a group better fitted to enter the simultaneously playful and horrifying world of cherry pie, murder, and demonic possession that David Lynch and Mark Frost brought to life."
The recording was produced by Jherek Bischoff and mixed by Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), and features Xiu Xiu's versions of the originally Julee Cruise-sung "Falling," jazzy instro creep-outs like "Dance of the Dream Man" and "Audrey's Dance," and melancholy pieces like the opening "Laura Palmer's Theme."
You'll find a full breakdown of what all Xiu Xiu cover down below. There, you'll also find a fuzz-soaked run-through of "Falling," with band leader Jamie Stewart handling Cruise's familiar vocal melody.
