Currently on his project Mammoth WVH's first tour opening for Guns N' Roses — a pretty solid gig — Wolfgang Van Halen has to insist: "I'm not fuckin' playing 'Panama' for you guys."
While the late, great Eddie Van Halen's son used to play in Van Halen, some fans attending the GN'R tour don't seem to be able to see past his hallowed last name. Either they don't realize there's original Mammoth WVH material — it's not a Van Halen tribute act — or they just think the musician ought to pay homage to his father with a cover or two.
Wolfgang shared his frustrations in a Twitter thread yesterday (August 23), beginning by sharing a screenshot of a fan's Facebook comment urging, "the time to honour dad is now" — to which the artist replied, "I honour my dad by existing and doing what I do everyday." "Y'all are never gonna fuckin stop are ya[?]" he captioned the exchange.
The musician continued jokingly: "I'm gonna cover the Bowie/Jagger version of 'Dancing in the Street' just to piss y'all off," before going on to point out the irony of the current criticism versus that which he once received for playing in Van Halen.
"*Plays in band with Dad* 'That spoiled brat is just riding his daddy's coattails,'" he added, "*Plays in own band without covering VH* 'Yo, why isn't he riding his daddy's coattails??'"
Points were definitely made. Wolfgang ended the ordeal by good-naturedly suggesting putting his original quip in the exchange on a T-shirt.

Mammoth WVH's self-titled debut album was released in June. It includes the single "Distance," which pays tribute to Wolgang's father. Meanwhile, you can hear a version of Van Halen's "Jump" that feels fitting for the times we're living in.
