Willis Earl Beal

'Principles of a Protagonist' (short film)

Last summer, outsider songwriter Willis Earl Beal announced plans to turn his novella Principles of a Protagonist into an animated film. That clip has now arrived.

The six-and-a-half-minute video, which premiered on Nowness, features black and white line drawing and stars Willis himself. It centres on a deadly storm in Chicago and, as the title implies, finds the narrator detailing a protagonist's principles. It features a melancholic score that contributes to the film's detached, mutedly morbid tone.

Beal said in an artist's statement, "The Protagonist does what we cannot. He embraces an inevitable destruction that is all inclusive. He knowingly constructs a set of principles that ultimately must dissolve within a meaningless void like the perceived order of life into the uncertainty of death."
