Watch Wake Blast Through "Paradigm Lost" for the Alberta Spotlight Series

Alberta grindcore act Wake honed the complexity of their sound and created a diverse body of work on their latest record, Misery Rites, and they've been devastating crowds with their crushingly heavy new songs. Recently, the band were invited by the National Music Centre to perform at Studio Bell for the Alberta Spotlight Series. Wake's brutal set was captured on film, and we're offering the first look at their performance of "Paradigm Lost."

The Alberta Spotlight Series focuses on bringing a vast range of artists to highlight the burgeoning music scene in the province. It has gathered everything from electronic artists to rock bands together to create a snapshot of what is coming out of the area artistically.

Wake guitarist Rob LaChance explains he was "a little shocked" the band were asked to perform but had an amazing experience working with the National Music Centre.

"We don't get to play hometown shows too often or as much we would like to so being asked to play such a unique and intimate show in a world-class facility like Studio Bell was a no-brainer," said LaChance. "I think we're the first and only 'heavy' band asked or to have even played at Studio Bell for that matter. By performing, we thought it would be a great way to represent what we as a band do and to highlight Alberta metal. Our hope was to maybe open more doors for other Alberta heavy bands."

Wake have also announced they're working on their follow-up to Misery Rites, and the album will arrive in 2020.

"As of last week our next album has been written and we're psyched to get back into Flatline Audio with Dave Otero again in September," said LaChance. "Spoiler: this will be our darkest, most bleak album of our discography. Forever pushing the boundaries of extreme metal."
