Watch Alanis Morissette Join Foo Fighters for Live Sinéad O'Connor Tribute

BY Ben OkazawaPublished Jul 31, 2023

Alanis Morissette took the stage twice at Japan's Fuji Rock Festival this weekend — once for her own set, and once to join the Foo Fighters as they paid tribute to the late, great Sinéad O'Connor with a cover of "Mandinka" from her 1987 debut album The Lion and the Cobra.

Dave Grohl welcomed Morissette to the mic, announcing, "An old friend to come up and sing with us tonight for a very special reason."

The Ottawa-born pop icon, who publicly grieved O'Connor's death on Instagram upon hearing the news, dedicated the cover to "a beautiful woman with high intelligence and deep empathy, way ahead of her time, who is no longer with us. This is for her."

She then launched into "Mandinka," her unmistakable tone taking the shine as Grohl stepped back to rhythm guitar duties for the cover.

It's no secret that the Foo Fighters love their surprises, most recently churning things up at Glastonbury, while Morissette has been busy contributing to the Yellowjackets soundtrack

Check out a fan-captured clip of their tribute below.
