Edmonton's Wares have shared a new video for their Survival track "Violence."
Reflecting on her time practicing Tae Kwon Do as a child, the band's Cassia J. Hardy collaborated with director Matthew Gooding to explore the hazy VHS-refracted memories of youth and the lessons learned through rigorous defence training.
"The gyms I trained at were strict, and followed a very rigid hierarchy and protocol which I grew to dislike," Hardy explained. "The lyrics use that experience as a lens to examine the pressures of performing masculinity as a closeted trans person, and the defence mechanisms one builds to survive those pressures."
Survival was released through the band's new label home, Mint Records, back in April 2020. Its release earned the band a spot on the Polaris Music Prize long list, and the album was featured on Exclaim!'s 25 Canadian Albums You Might Have Missed.
