The 2016 edition of the Wacken Metal Battle Canada contest is coming close to crowning a victor, with regional winners now set to face off in Toronto for a chance to play the iconic European metal festival this summer.

As previously reported, more than 100 bands fought for metal supremacy in Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Regina, London, Hamilton, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. Canada has produced two Metal Battle world champions within the past three years, beating out over 30 other countries from around the world.

The Canadian final showcase will be held on June 11 at Toronto's Opera House, with the contestants being Edmonton's Tales of the Tomb, Hamilton's Profaner, Toronto's Pyramid Theorem, Vancouver's the Mountain Man and Montreal's Distorthead. The evening will be headlined by guest headliner Crimson Shadows, who won the competition in 2013.

"The National Final is upon us once again. In the name of Canadian metal, and in honour of all who have participated and supported the 2016 Metal Battle, we're very proud to present some of Canada's finest metal acts," organizer JJ Tartaglia said in a statement. "Let us rally together and give the winning band a proper send off to Germany."

The bands will be judged by a panel of industry professionals who will be announced at a later date. The winner will then be sent to Germany to perform at the Wacken Open Air 2016 festival, which runs August 4 to 6.
