Starting out as a program on University of Western Ontario community station CHRW, A Person Disguised as People has been dedicated to exposing listeners and readers (on its blog) to overlooked, underexposed and (most of the time) challenging sounds from across the globe. With Forest City Series Vol. 1, A Person Disguised as People aims to celebrate perhaps one of Canada's most covert music scenes. Collecting a dozen artists associated with London, Ontario's electronic scene, Forest City Series Vol. 1 captures a remarkable cultural zeitgeist, as each track works from similar sonic and stylistic backgrounds.
Artists like Worldcatcher, Ned Flangers and Noise Level all draw from early techno labels like Underground Resistance, Metalheadz and Warp, while Wormwood and You'll Never Get to Heaven are indebted to 4AD's otherworldly outlook. Even when artists come off (a bit too) fashionable (Dreamsploitation, Para Palabras), everything on this 12-track comp seems to exude luminosity and warmth. Forest City Series Vol. 1 remains an outstanding collection of music from a scene that you didn't know even existed.
