Vancouver's FRANKIIE have detailed their sophomore LP. The West Coast outfit will share new album Between Dreams on June 2 via Paper Bag Records.
Following 2019 debut Forget Your Head, the 10-song Between Dreams was written between the band's "dark, moldy jam space" in East Vancouver, and at home or on writing retreats in rural British Columbia.
That duality is also felt in the circumstances: writing when COVID-19 public health measures were in place, and writing in a more open world.
"It was this weird 'between dreams' state because nothing was normal, or at least not how it was and we just had to carry on like everyone else," vocalist/guitarist Francesca Carbonneau explains, sharing of their creative output, "These songs were following a sense of intuition, and not really trying to have them be anything but what instinctively came out. There was no attempt to stick to a certain genre, or take ourselves too seriously."
One song to emerge from those retreats is "Garden," arriving alongside today's album news in the form of a live performance video shot at Vancouver's Smiling Buddha Cafe.
In a statement, Lloyd explains how the writing retreats allowed the band to "detach from the intensity of urban life and focus on music together," recalling, "We would write all afternoon in the cabin, and take a break to slow down and watch the stars expand forever. The stillness I feel while listening to the ocean or being surrounded by trees is always something I am longing to reconnect with while living life in the city."
Joining Carbonneau and keyboardist/vocalist Nashlyn Lloyd on Between Dreams are previous bassist Vickie Sieczka, new bassist Jody Glenham, drummer Trevor Stöddärt, and even a drum machine they nicknamed Chad. The album was recorded with producer Jason Corbett at Jacknife Sound, and with Connor Head at Catalogue Studio in Victoria.
