Troy Gregory

Sybil

BY Roman SokalPublished Jun 1, 2002

Detroit, MI's Troy Gregory (of the Witches) is a "jack of all trades" eccentric who was once in a major label heavy metal band (Flotsam and Jetsam) and almost joined Metallica, according to the liner notes of his solo album. And much in the tradition of great Detroit area crooners like Andre Williams, Gregory employs great backup musicians to support his insanity, using the likes of the Dirtbombs, Bantam Rooster, Slumber Party, Wildbunch, the Sights, and more. What occurs is a multi-perplexed array of garage rock sounds that becomes sort of an aural atlas for the Detroit music scene. The album echoes like the bathrooms of a dilapidated bar in Detroit and is full of character and polished filth. Ensuring the authenticity of the incestuous affair is co-producer Jim Diamond, who adds a sonic time machine element to Sybil.
