poolblood, the pen name of Toronto's Maryam Said, is today celebrating their addition to the Next Door Records roster with the release of new single and accompanying video, "twinkie."

Drawing inspiration from the likes of Fiona Apple, Nick Drake, Ichiko Aoba and Mitski, a spunky punk-rock spirit sprawls into lush, expansive bedroom pop — what Poolblood does best. The track was produced by Shamir, who also lends guitars and drums to the mix.

Of the song, Said explained in a statement: "'twinkie' is a song I wrote about the tenderness of time, time as a source of love, and the way time is the ultimate parent. Starting over is as sweet as a golden sponge cake."

The Emma Cosgrove-directed video, shot on film, brings about a nostalgic, vintage feel. "The song is about starting over, so it was great timing to have Emma and I shoot the video while the flowers were blooming," the musician added.

Said will be releasing their debut album under the acclaimed Toronto indie label — which will also produce upcoming releases from Bells Larsen, Patrick Holland and Living Hour — in the coming months.
