Tucked amongst the shelves of books in Ottawa's Black Squirrel Books on Friday night (February 3), Peterborough, ON's the Lonely Parade made quick work of winning the audience over with their knotty, wry and fuzzed-out tunes.
Pairing weighty, existential crises with intricate instrumentation, the tight-as-heck three-piece were a definite highlight of Megaphono's lineup. In addition to playing through some obvious favourites, the Lonely Parade also treated to the crowd to new songs, tentatively titled "New 3" and "New 5," that were just as sharp and polished as the group's more well-worn numbers.
Though their lyrics are often contemplative and deal with heavy subjects like mortality, the complex arrangements and time signatures that the band trades in never weighed the songs down. "Window," the opening track from their most recent record, No Shade, is one such example of how well they balance their songs out with pop sensibilities, finding ample opportunity for noise and crafty complexity within a simple structure.
