Wouldn't it be nice if the Beach Boys ended up issuing a massive box set to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their beloved, game-changing Pet Sounds? Well, fans of Brian Wilson's head-swirling pop masterpiece will be able to hold onto just that when a deluxe and expanded anniversary edition lands June 10 via Capitol/UMe.
A press release explains that the familiar sounds of "Sloop John B," "God Only Knows" and more have been remastered in both stereo and mono for the upcoming release. Spread across four CDs and a Blu-ray audio disc, the collectors package also finds the material mastered in 5.1 surround.
The first disc features Pet Sounds in stereo and mono, and also includes promo spots and a track of unused vocals. The second and third discs deliver a bevy of alternate takes, instrumental demos, backing tracks, dog barking sessions, and other assorted studio highlights.
The fourth disc, meanwhile, features a bunch of previously unreleased live versions recorded between 1966 and 1993.
Beyond the box set, Pet Sounds is also being reissued as a bonus track-trimming double CD, as separate stereo and mono vinyl releases, and digitally.

It's added in the press release that 2016 also marks the 50th anniversary of standalone psych-surf single "Good Vibrations." A commemorative release behind that track is also in the works.
As for songwriter Brian Wilson's present-day activities, he's currently celebrating Pet Sounds by playing it in its entirety across the globe. The 50th anniversary tour is being touted as the final time he'll be playing the material as such.
