The Band's Garth Hudson Delivers Surprise Performance at New York House Concert

Garth Hudson — the foundational keyboardist and one of two surviving members of the Band — made a rare appearance at a New York house concert over the weekend.

Footage has emerged of Hudson, 85, in attendance at a house concert hosted by the musician and fellow keyboardist Sarah Perrotta. A clip shared by Perrotta, which you can find below, shows Hudson playing Duke Ellington's "Sophisticated Lady."

Reached by Exclaim! for comment, Perrotta called Hudson "a dear friend" and shared how she was "honoured that he played at my house concert."

Perrotta wrote on Instagram, "What a gift to not only have Cindy Cashdollar, Jerry Marotta and Happy Traum play with SuperFolk but also a surprise set from Garth Hudson of the Band who has not played a concert in years! Making rock and roll history in my living room."

Hudson has rarely appeared or performed in public in recent years. In 2019, the artist was made a Member of the Order of Canada. 2010 saw him release Garth Hudson Presents: A Canadian Celebration of the Band, an album of Band covers featuring  Neil Young, Bruce Cockburn, Blue Rodeo, Cowboy Junkies, the Trews, Great Big Sea, Hawksley Workman, Mary Margaret O'Hara and more.
