Jimmy LaValle arguably crafted his finest album as the Album Leaf with 2001's One Day I'll Be on Time — a beautifully executed exercise in ambient-laced post-rock that has gone to stand as a classic for many. It's great news indeed then that LaValle is dusting off the album for a 20th anniversary release.
However, rather than just reissue the album, LaValle is taking a different approach. He's decided to rework the entire record for a release called One Day XX, which is set to arrive on September 17.
For the redo, LaValle has brought in longtime creative partner James McAlister (Taylor Swift, Sufjan Stevens, the National) and members of the Album Leaf live band to help reimagine each track on One Day I'll Be on Time.
"My first thought was, 'oh this song is on guitar, let's do it on the synth, or this song is on the Rhodes, let's do it on something else,' but more than that, I wanted to give these songs a new sense of space and depth, to see how far we could go and wide we could get," LaValle explained in a statement.

"'Vermillion' is a staple song in all of my shows. For the rework, I wanted to capture what it's become after playing it live for so many years, it has become a whole different beast from when I first recorded it," he explained. "I'd always wanted to feature Matt Resovich's violin work, but also wanted to capture the sound of the full band's performance. Dave LeBleu tracked his drums remotely in Gainesville, Brad Lee tracked bass in (San Diego) I tracked my Rhodes Piano at my studio in Los Angeles, and Matt Resovich (Joshua Tree) did the same for his Violin. James and I took these tracks to build a new version with new life for this rework."
In recent years, LaValle turned his attention towards releasing soundtracks as the Album Leaf — the most recent of why was this year's Synchronic. The last proper studio album from the Album Leaf, meanwhile, arrived with 2016's Between Waves.
