Tess Roby Unveils Sophomore Album 'Ideas of Space,' Shares Title Track

The LP will also mark the first release on the Montreal-based artist's own label SSURROUNDSS

Montreal (by way of Toronto) artist Tess Roby returns today with an announcement in three acts: she's launching her own label, releasing her sophomore album and sharing a video for the album's title track.

Ideas of Space is set to arrive on April 22 via Roby's own imprint SSURROUNDSS. It follows the singer-songwriter's 2018 debut Beacon and her 2020 collaborative project Dawn to Dawn.

Taking control as a songwriter, producer, musician, music video/art director and label founder, Ideas of Space will see Roby explore more expansive shapes in her electronic, ambient-leaning dream pop soundscapes that often embrace alt-folk song structures. The album's horizons are widened even further through collaborations with Ouri, Austin Tufts of Braids and Joseph Shabason.

"'Ideas of Space' signals the beginning of a new chapter," Roby said of the cinematic title track, emblematic of the body of work at large.

She continued:

This song is hypnotic and sinuous, and sonically possesses a certain power and urgency. When I listen to it I imagine vast landscapes; a climb; a journey. Two distinct voices speak to each other — one lost, questioning — and the other guiding the way. I wanted to visually represent those voices and the journey I was on while making this album: one of self-discovery, hardship, adventure and, in the end, confidence and strength.
