Sisters Tyr Jami (the Winks) and Zuzu Knew (Klô Pelgag, Tommy Kruise, Tanya Tagaq) came together with Aleks Schürmer (Party Like It's 1699) back in 2012 for a project by the name of Syngja, and the musical trio are finally ready to release their debut album. Lang Amma will arrive on May 27 through Art Not Love Records.
Dedicated to the sisters' grandmother Ingibjorg Johnson, the record finds the group reinterpreting Icelandic folk songs with a modern flair. The eight-song set incorporates the sounds and production techniques of psychedelic, classical and electronic music, blending Jami's voice and cello-based compositions with Schürmer's minimalist synth and percussion work; the latter also produced the debut effort.
The album will get a live premiere at Montreal's Rialto Theatre on May 19, featuring Schürmer's arrangements performed by an eight-piece ensemble, accompanied by live analog visuals courtesy of Knew.
Knew also created the Lang Amma artwork, which is pictured above. The album's full tracklisting can be found down below.
In addition to news of the forthcoming full-length, Exclaim! is pleased to premiere a taste of what the group have been working on in the form of "Hot N Cold." If that title sounds familiar, rest assured, it is in fact a Katy Perry cover. Although the cover tune won't be appearing on the upcoming album, you can hear Syngja put their own fascinating spin on the pop smash in the player at the bottom of the page.
Lang Amma:
1. Pink Prism
2. Monster Trucks
3. Surface of the Sea
4. Remember
5. Go to Sleep
6. Close to the Edge
7. Romantic Part
8. Easy
