The weekend was not a good one for knife-related violence at live concerts. Following the stabbing at a New York Cro-Mags show, a concert in Dublin starring EDM giants Swedish House Mafia also ended tragically when a man stabbed four people.
According to BBC News [via FACT], police reported that one man stabbed four people at the band's Dublin show on Saturday (July 8). Three of those people were seriously injured, including one whose status is critical.
An additional five people sustained injuries during a fight that also involved knives and broken bottles.
On top of that, a man in his early 20s died of a suspected drug overdose.
The show took place at Dublin's Phoenix Park as part of the trio's farewell tour. In addition to Swedish House Mafia, the show included appearances from Snoop Dogg, Tinie Tempah and Calvin Harris.
Denis Desmond, a spokesman for concert promoters MCD, explained that they will cooperate with police in any way that they can, adding:
Ticket holders entering the site were subject to a search permissible by law. Every precaution, as far as possible, was taken to ensure the safety and security of the audience at all times. Despite our best efforts -- with security and gardaí personnel levels well in excess of the required numbers for a licensed event of this size-- there is only so much one can do to combat anti-social behaviour.
Thirty people were arrested on charges that varied from assault to drugs.
