In announcing their Life Metal album back in February, Sunn O))) revealed that an additional companion album would see release this year. Now, the drone outfit have shared details of said effort.
Titled Pyroclasts, the band's latest arrives October 25 through Southern Lord. The album was recorded and mixed by Steve Albini during the July 2018 sessions for Life Metal.
The four pieces of Pyroclasts are the result of a daily practice during said sessions, at which the musicians would perform a 12-minute improvised modal drone at the start or end of the workday.
Timed with a stopwatch and tracked to two-inch tape, the process was "a chance to dig into a deep opening or closing of the days session in a deep musical way... To connect/reconnect, liberate the creative mind a bit and greet each other and the space through the practice of sound immersion."
Joining Sunn O))) co-founders Stephen O'Malley and Greg Anderson on the album are composer and occasional live collaborator Hildur Guðnadóttir, Silkworm's Tim Midyett and T.O.S. The band dedicate the album to Ron Guardipee, Kerstin Daley and Scott Walker.
