Sumac

'The Deal' (album stream)

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Feb 11, 2015

With the originally proposed February 3 due date now long gone, it's clear that Pacific Northwest metal duo Sumac didn't end up delivering The Deal on time. To make up for the delay, the band are now levelling listeners with an online stream of their full-length debut.

We'd already heard the overpowering "Thorn in the Lion's Paw" and "Blight's Light Angel," but now you'll learn how they fit in with the rest of the six-song set.

"Spectral Gold" is an alchemic assault of metal licks and unsettling ambiance. "Hollow King" is a full-bodied banger full of grizzly bear growls, detuned guitar damage and bone-breaking beats, as well as minimalist free jazz-style freakout. Parts of the album are in tune with guitarist/vocalist Aaron Turner's time with Isis, but drummer Nick Yacyshyn (Baptists) sprinkles the set with his typically insane, kit-wrecking work too.

Now due next Tuesday (February 17), The Deal lands via Profound Lore/SIGE Records. You'll find the stream below, courtesy of Metal Sucks.
