Sumac

"Thorn in the Lion's Paw"

Now that Sumac, the metal supergroup comprising Old Man Gloom's Aaron Turner and Baptists drummer Nick Yacyshyn, have officially started playing shows, the project has also begun to roll out material off their forthcoming The Deal LP online. You can stream the epic and enigmatic "Thorn in the Lion's Paw" right now.

So what's the deal with Sumac, you might say in your worst Jerry Seinfeld impersonation? Well, judging by this nine-minute crusher, Sumac delivers doom and gloom extremely on point. Following a discordant intro of mashed-out piano chords, Turner chugs through the speakers with some mighty meaty riffs. Master percussionist Yacyshyn supports these throughout the track with octopus-armed fills, the occasional blast beat, and, most importantly, an elephantine groove.

The Deal drops February 3 through Profound Lore/SIGE Records.
