Sufjan Stevens

A Sun Came

BY I. KhiderPublished Nov 1, 2001

A Celtic folk and rock album, A Sun Came is skilfully put together, as demonstrated by Stevens' finely crafted lyrics and excellent musicianship. In fact, I was surprised to learn that Stevens played most of the instruments on the album himself, and well. Other musicians appear on this album as guest vocalists or instrumentalists, but only on a few tracks. The first half of the album is where Stevens expresses the Celtic influence, while the latter half is more rock, punctuated by the odd guitar ballad piece. Stevens is a multi-talented and gifted musician who can play practically any style and has collaborated and toured with such notables as the Danielson Family. Because of the sheer amount of songs and styles on this album, one listen is like being sonically stuffed at a musical buffet.
