Stevie Nicks Says Taylor Swift's "You're on Your Own, Kid" Helped Her Grieve Christine McVie

"That is the sadness of how I feel," said the icon of the song at a recent show

Stevie Nicks has a (very nice) habit of expressing her fandom of younger artists who've clearly been inspired at least in part by her legendary music — the most obvious example is in HAIM, who Nicks has shouted out on numerous occasions. That relationship deepened further last year when Nicks dedicated HAIM's "Hallelujah" to the late Christine McVie, writing that she had hoped to one day sing it with McVie.

Now, Nicks has dedicated another song to her relationship with McVie — Taylor Swift's "You're on Your Own, Kid," which Nicks shouted out at a recent show in Atlanta, describing the Midnights track as capturing "the sadness of how I feel."

"Thank you to Taylor Swift for doing a favour for me, and that is writing a song called 'You're on Your Own, Kid,'" Nicks told the Atlanta crowd. "That is the sadness of how I feel."

"Even on the other side of the world, we didn't have to talk on the phone," the singer explained of her relationship with McVie. "And then we'd go back to Fleetwood Mac and we'd walk in and just be like, 'Little sister, how are you.' It was like never a minute had passed. Never an argument in our entire 47 years."

She continued, thanking Swift again: "The two of us were on our own, kids. We always were. And now, I'm having to learn to be on my own, kid, by myself. You helped me to do that. Thank you."

McVie died at 79 in November of last year following a stroke. At the time of her passing, the remaining members of Fleetwood Mac released a joint statement mourning the keyboardist and songwriter, writing, "She was truly one-of-a-kind, special and talented beyond measure … the best musician anyone could have in their band and the best friend anyone could have in their life."
